Chart Ruler Calculator

Your chart ruler is the planet that rules your rising sign — the captain of your whole chart. Where it sits by sign and house shows a major thread of your life’s story. Because it depends on your Ascendant, this needs an exact birth time.

Frequently asked questions

What is a chart ruler?

Your chart ruler (or ascendant ruler) is the planet that rules the sign on your Ascendant. Because the rising sign sets the whole framework of your chart, its ruler acts as a kind of significator for you — its sign, house, and condition describe a central theme of your life.

How do you find the chart ruler?

We find your rising sign from your exact birth time and place, then identify the planet that rules it (for example, Mars rules Aries, Venus rules Libra). We use modern rulerships, so Scorpio is ruled by Pluto, Aquarius by Uranus, and Pisces by Neptune. We then show where that ruler sits by sign and house.

Why does the chart ruler need an exact birth time?

Because the chart ruler is defined by your rising sign, and the rising sign changes roughly every two hours, an accurate birth time is essential. Without it, the wrong rising sign — and therefore the wrong chart ruler — can be calculated.
