Frequently asked questions

What is a natal moon phase?

Your natal moon phase is the phase the Moon was in at the moment of your birth — New, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full, Disseminating, Last Quarter, or Balsamic. It is defined by the angular distance between your Sun and Moon and describes the deeper rhythm of your personality and purpose.

How is the natal moon phase calculated?

We measure the angle from your Sun to your Moon, going forward through the zodiac. That separation, from 0° up to 360°, places you in one of the eight lunar phases. A separation near 0° is a New Moon birth; near 180° is a Full Moon birth; and the phases in between fill out the cycle.

Do I need an exact birth time for my moon phase?

Usually not. The Sun-Moon angle changes slowly enough that your birth date and place almost always pin the phase. The only exception is if you were born right at the boundary between two phases, where an accurate time settles which one you get.
