Annual Profections Explained: Your Year-by-Year Forecast
Annual profections are one of the simplest and most useful timing techniques in traditional astrology. Each year of your life, a different house — and its ruling planet, the “lord of the year” — becomes activated, setting the theme for the next twelve months. The math is so simple you can do it in your head.
Step by step
- Take your age. Use your current age in completed years. At age 0 (your first year) you start from the 1st house.
- Count houses by age. Each year advances one house: age 1 → 2nd house, age 2 → 3rd, and so on. Every 12 years the cycle returns to the 1st house (ages 12, 24, 36, 48 are all 1st-house years).
- Identify the profected house. The house you land on is the year’s focus — for example, a 7th-house year emphasizes relationships and partnership.
- Find the lord of the year. The planet that rules the sign on that house is your lord of the year. Its natal condition and current transits become especially important.
- Watch the lord’s transits. Track where the lord of the year is by transit and what it aspects. Those contacts time the key events of your profected year.
A quick example
Say you are 29. Counting from the 1st house at age 0, age 29 lands on the 6th house (29 mod 12 = 5, so the 6th house). That makes it a year emphasizing work, health, and daily routines, and whichever planet rules your 6th house becomes the lord of the year to watch by transit.
Why profections are so useful
They cut through the noise. In any given year dozens of transits are technically active; profections tell you which planet to prioritize. When the lord of the year is also receiving a major transit, that is your signal that the year’s headline event is forming.
Combining profections with transits
Profections and transits work best together. Profections name the theme and the planet; transits provide the timing and the trigger. Reading them in tandem is far more precise than reading transits alone.
Frequently asked questions
What is the lord of the year in profections?
It is the planet that rules the sign on the house your age profects to. That planet sets the year’s theme, and its transits time the year’s key events.
How do I calculate my profection for this year?
Start from the 1st house at age 0 and advance one house per year of age. Your current age, counted around the twelve houses, gives the profected house; the cycle repeats every 12 years.
Are profections better than transits?
They answer different questions. Profections tell you which planet matters most this year; transits tell you when things happen. Used together they are far more precise than either alone.
