Frequently asked questions
What are essential dignities?
Essential dignities are a traditional way of rating how well a planet is placed by sign. A planet in its own sign (domicile) or exaltation is strong and expresses easily; a planet in its detriment (opposite its rulership) or fall (opposite its exaltation) is challenged; a planet with no dignity is called peregrine.
Which planets does this calculator cover?
It covers the seven classical planets used in traditional astrology — the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn — because the dignity scheme (domicile, exaltation, detriment, fall) was built around them. The modern outer planets are not part of the classical dignity table.
What does it mean if a planet is peregrine?
Peregrine means a planet has no essential dignity or debility in its sign — it is neither strengthened nor weakened by placement alone. Such a planet often expresses in a more neutral, adaptable, or unpredictable way, and other factors in the chart become more important for judging it.
