Why read the originals

Most modern astrology writing is downstream of a handful of old books, and a great deal is downstream of summaries of those books. Reading the source is frequently surprising: techniques presented today as ancient tradition often turn out to be twentieth-century inventions, and genuinely old techniques are often used now in ways their authors would not recognise.

Reading them fairly

These texts carry the assumptions of their time, including views about class, gender, and health that are simply wrong and were harmful. Read them as historical documents. The technical material is the durable part; the social judgements attached to it are not, and a modern practitioner has no obligation to carry them forward.
