Jupiter in Astrology
Where things expand, and where expansion becomes excess.
Jupiter is the first of the social planets and the point where a chart stops being purely personal. It governs growth, meaning, belief, and opportunity, and it has the best reputation in astrology — largely undeserved, or at least oversimplified. Jupiter expands whatever it touches, and expansion is only good news when the thing expanding is good. The traditional name, the greater benefic, is accurate as long as you remember that overconfidence and overreach are also Jupiter.
How Jupiter moves
Jupiter spends about one year in each sign and takes roughly twelve years to complete the zodiac. It retrogrades once a year for about four months. That twelve-year cycle means the Jupiter return — Jupiter back at its natal degree — happens at roughly ages 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, and it is one of the more legible rhythms in a life.
Reading Jupiter as a transit
Jupiter transits last long enough to describe a chapter. Jupiter through a house corresponds to about a year of that department of life opening up, getting more attention, and being easier to grow. This is where Jupiter earns its reputation. The caution is that Jupiter also removes the sense of limit, so its transits are associated with taking on more than is sustainable — the good year in which the seeds of the overextension get planted.
Jupiter in a natal chart
Natal Jupiter shows where a person is naturally generous, optimistic, and inclined to overdo. Its house is where they expect things to work out, which usually means they take more risk there and, often enough, get away with it. The sign describes the flavour of the belief system. Jupiter is also traditionally read as the source of a person's luck, which is better understood as the area where they behave as though they will be fine, and are therefore more willing to try.
Jupiter retrograde
Jupiter retrogrades once a year for about four months. As with the other outer planets, retrograde motion is normal rather than exceptional — Jupiter spends roughly a third of every year retrograde — so treating it as an anomaly is a mistake. It is conventionally read as a turn from outward expansion to internal reassessment of what the growth was for.
Jupiter through the twelve signs
The sign colours how Jupiter expresses, but the house it occupies usually says more about where it operates in a life. Read both.

| ♉ Taurus Earth · Fixed |
Expands through accumulation and steadiness. Growth is slow, material, and generally kept. |
| ♊ Gemini Air · Mutable |
Expands through learning and connection. Range is the gift; depth is the cost. |
| ♋ Cancer Water · Cardinal |
Expands through care and belonging. Traditionally exalted here — generosity comes easily and returns. |
| ♌ Leo Fire · Fixed |
Expands through creative confidence. Believes in itself sufficiently to convince others, sometimes prematurely. |
| ♍ Virgo Earth · Mutable |
Expands through craft and usefulness. Growth is incremental and comes from doing the work properly. |
| ♎ Libra Air · Cardinal |
Expands through relationship and fairness. Opportunity tends to arrive through other people. |
| ♏ Scorpio Water · Fixed |
Expands through depth and shared resources. Growth comes from what is hidden or inherited. |
| ♐ Sagittarius Fire · Mutable |
Expands through meaning and travel. Its own sign — belief is the engine, and proportion is the problem. |
| ♑ Capricorn Earth · Cardinal |
Expands through structure and patience. In fall here: growth is real but grudging and slow. |
| ♒ Aquarius Air · Fixed |
Expands through community and ideas. Benefit arrives via networks rather than individuals. |
| ♓ Pisces Water · Mutable |
Expands through compassion and imagination. Traditional ruler — boundless, and boundless in both directions. |
