Mercury in Astrology
How you think, how you say it, and what happens to information on the way.
Mercury governs the mechanics of mind: how you take information in, sort it, and hand it on. It is the least glamorous personal planet and the one that most visibly shapes how someone comes across, because almost everything anybody knows about you arrived through your Mercury. It also has the unhappy distinction of being the only planet most people can name a transit for, usually inaccurately.
How Mercury moves
Mercury never strays more than 28 degrees from the Sun, so it is always in the same sign as the Sun or one adjacent. It takes about a year to circle the zodiac but its pace is uneven: two to four weeks in a sign normally, considerably longer when a retrograde catches it. It retrogrades three or four times a year for about three weeks each time.
Reading Mercury as a transit
Mercury transits are short and mostly show up as changes in what is being discussed and how quickly. They are worth reading in aggregate rather than individually — a run of Mercury aspects to natal placements in one house tends to mean that department of life is generating paperwork, conversations, and decisions. On their own, individual Mercury contacts rarely justify rescheduling anything.
Mercury in a natal chart
Natal Mercury describes thinking style, not intelligence, and the distinction matters. Sign gives the manner — fast or deliberate, concrete or abstract, blunt or diplomatic. House gives the subject matter the mind returns to unprompted. Whether Mercury is ahead of or behind the Sun in the zodiac is a genuinely useful detail that most software ignores: behind the Sun tends to think before speaking, ahead tends to think by speaking.
Mercury retrograde
Mercury retrograde is the most over-claimed phenomenon in astrology. What it reliably corresponds to is a slower, more revisionary period in Mercury's domains: things needing to be redone, said again, or checked. What it does not do is break appliances or justify avoiding contracts. Three weeks, three or four times a year, is a quarter of the year — a claim that a quarter of all years is unsuitable for signing anything does not survive contact with reality. The genuinely useful part is the retrograde's triple pass: Mercury crosses the same degree three times, so a topic raised on the first pass often gets resolved on the third.
Mercury through the twelve signs
The sign colours how Mercury expresses, but the house it occupies usually says more about where it operates in a life. Read both.
| Sign | Mercury here |
|---|---|
| ♈ Aries Fire · Cardinal |
Thinks fast and out loud. First formulation is usually the one spoken, which is both the strength and the cost. |
| ♉ Taurus Earth · Fixed |
Thinks slowly and once. Reaching a conclusion takes time; dislodging it takes considerably more. |
| ♊ Gemini Air · Mutable |
Thinks in branches. Holds several threads comfortably and can lose the original one entirely. |
| ♋ Cancer Water · Cardinal |
Thinks by association and memory. Arguments carry emotional weight because the reasoning runs through it. |
| ♌ Leo Fire · Fixed |
Thinks in statements. Ideas are held with warmth and delivered with some performance attached. |
| ♍ Virgo Earth · Mutable |
Thinks in corrections. Notices the flaw first, which is invaluable in analysis and grating in conversation. |
| ♎ Libra Air · Cardinal |
Thinks in comparisons. Cannot settle a view without having weighed the opposite one, sometimes indefinitely. |
| ♏ Scorpio Water · Fixed |
Thinks in subtext. Assumes the stated reason is not the whole reason, and is often right. |
| ♐ Sagittarius Fire · Mutable |
Thinks in principles. Reaches for the general rule quickly, occasionally before the details support it. |
| ♑ Capricorn Earth · Cardinal |
Thinks in structures. Wants the argument load-bearing before committing to it out loud. |
| ♒ Aquarius Air · Fixed |
Thinks in systems and exceptions. Attracted to the counter-position on reflex, whether or not it is correct. |
| ♓ Pisces Water · Mutable |
Thinks in images. Grasps things whole and then struggles to reconstruct the steps for anyone else. |

What does Mercury represent in a birth chart?
Mercury represents thinking style, language, and how information is taken in and passed on. Its sign describes the manner of thought; its house describes the subject matter the mind returns to.
How often does Mercury go retrograde?
Mercury retrogrades three or four times a year, for about three weeks each time. During a retrograde it crosses the same degrees three times in total.
Can Mercury be in a different sign from the Sun?
Yes. Mercury never moves more than 28 degrees from the Sun, so it is always in the same sign as the Sun or one of the two adjacent signs.
Is Mercury retrograde a bad time to sign contracts?
There is no reliable basis for that claim. Mercury retrograde covers roughly a quarter of every year. It corresponds better to periods of revision and re-checking than to a prohibition on decisions.
