How Mars moves
Mars spends about six to seven weeks in a sign in normal motion and takes roughly two years to circle the zodiac. It retrogrades about every two years for two to two and a half months, and because it is slow enough to matter, a Mars retrograde in a sign can stretch its stay there to seven months or more.
Reading Mars as a transit
Mars transits are where timing becomes practical, because Mars is fast enough to be specific and slow enough to be felt. Transiting Mars crossing a natal placement corresponds to a period of a few days where that part of the chart is energised and, often, irritable. Its passage through a house marks where effort is being spent. Mars aspects to natal Saturn or Pluto are worth noting in advance: they are the classic frustration transits, where effort meets something immovable.

Mars retrograde
Mars retrograde, roughly every two years for about two months, corresponds to a period where forward effort stops working and pushing harder makes things worse. It is generally read as a poor window for launching anything that requires momentum, and a reasonable one for revisiting an approach that has stalled. Because Mars is slow, the retrograde is genuinely noticeable in a way most Mercury retrogrades are not.
