The Moon is the fastest-moving body in the chart and, in practice, the most personal. It describes what you do before you have decided to do anything — the reflex, the thing you reach for when the day has gone badly. If the Sun is the self you are building, the Moon is the self you already are and cannot argue with. It is also the placement most often wrong in a chart, because it moves so fast that an incorrect birth time or timezone can shift it a whole sign.
How Moon moves
The Moon covers about 13 degrees a day, staying roughly two and a half days in each sign and completing the zodiac in 27.3 days. That speed makes it the engine of short-term timing: the Moon aspects everything in your chart every month. It is also why lunar returns — the Moon back at its natal degree, once a month — are used for reading the coming month rather than the coming year.
Reading Moon as a transit
Individual Moon transits are too fast to plan around, and treating them as events is the fastest way to make astrology useless. What they are good for is texture: the emotional weather of a day, why a conversation landed differently than expected. The two lunar factors actually worth tracking are the phase — new and full moons, especially when they fall on a natal placement — and the void-of-course period, the stretch after the Moon makes its last aspect in a sign before entering the next, traditionally considered poor for starting things that need to go somewhere.
Moon in a natal chart
The natal Moon is where you look when someone asks what a person actually needs, as distinct from what they say they want. Its sign describes the shape of the need and its house describes where the person goes to get it met. A Moon in the eleventh house needs the group; a Moon in the fourth needs the door closed. Neither is better, and mismatching the two is a reliable source of quiet unhappiness.
